In 1961, a small group of enthusiastic bank note collectors recognized the need to separate collecting bank notes from other numismatic interests and to forge an understanding of a largely unrecognized or overlooked collectable. Since it was established, members of the IBNS have been and still are leading figures in the field of paper money collecting, researchers of numerous bank note issues, as well as being students of financial history and associated subjects.
The IBNS is not just a society of collectors, it is a fraternity of fellow-minded people. Many members have corresponded for years, without ever meeting their correspondents. The IBNS has numerous chapters throughout the world which allow members to meet, share a common interest, and offer the opportunity to learn of bank notes and their stories from other dedicated collectors.
